IT training and development in Ecuador

3 months - Ecuador, Quito

CWW volunteer Stuart was in his late 30's when he decided to take 2 years out of his career as a data networks professional. He planned spend time in South and North America but didn't want to just travel - so he came to CWW asking for an assignment which would use his skills.

We matched him with a network of 1500 schools across Ecuador, who wanted to use IT to share ideas and teaching materials. He found that they had knowledge of IT - they knew it had potential but had no idea how to use it. He took on the mammoth task of helping them to understand more clearly what they wanted, and exploring options for a network.

Over his 3-month placement Stuart familiarised and trained management in the opportunities and benefits of IT for the organisation. He installed a Local Area Network (LAN) in preparation for an intranet and created an initial web presence for them. Due to the enormous complexities of the infrastructure situation there, he was not able connect the schools with an intranet before he left, but he evaluated the options available and making recommendations for the future.

Most significantly, Stuart made huge achievements in helping the organisation see IT as a useful tool for their development. He was able to point out many opportunities for using IT to reduce costs, improve communications, make administration more effective and help with teacher training and budget planning and when he left they were very excited about implementing these in the future. According to them, Stuart "has created an earthquake and shown us how to move forward into a new phase." They were delighted with his work and with how he integrated into the organisation - he has made friends for life.

Stuart went on to continue his round the world trip, but the project is being developed by two more CWW Volunteers, a network engineer and a web-designer.
