IT and Financial Advisor in Belize

Although a qualified accountant, CWW volunteer Andrea Glenton had been working as an IT consultant over the last 7 years. She decided to volunteer as she “needed a change of scene and a break from corporate life for a while”
Andrea was initially asked by her Belize hosts to implement a financial computer system for the HQ office and 7 district offices. On arrival however Andrea, an experienced consultant, quickly identified that her old accounting skills were actually of much more use than she imagined and so focused her attention on implementing basic financial controls, a budget and a manual reporting system in the districts.
“I treated the work very much like I would treat any consulting assignment; therefore I settled down quickly and just got on with the job in hand”
Andrea was primarily based in the HQ office in Belize City working alongside the Director General, Finance Officer and several local volunteers. The work Andrea was involved in meant frequent visits out to the various district offices as well which certainly kept her busy.
Each district office was staffed by volunteers, working on everything from carrying first aid training through to organising activities to raise funds to keep the office going. Andrea quickly found that although all the district offices worked on similar remits and were accountable to the head office, each office definitely had its own culture, problems and accounting idiosyncrasies.
“The main work challenge was trying to get input from the very high profile and very low attending executive committee”
By the end of her 3 months Andrea had successfully developed and delivered a finance manual, a budget and provided staff with some very basic finance training. “For me it was very much a consulting job with a strong emphasis of organizational change”
