Financial Planning with charity for the visually impaired
3 months -
|
Calum Scott, a career economist and accountant went to Belize on a 3-month assignment to work with CWW partner - the Belize Council for the Visually Impaired (BCVI). His main role was to develop a 5-year financial model incorporating forecasts and financial planning advice to help the BCVI ensure financial sustainability.
Prior to leaving the UK, Calum set about his task with great enthusiasm putting a great deal of effort into fundraising to cover his costs whilst he was away. He fully utilised CWW's on-line fundraising account through Workwithus.org, letting his friends, family and work colleagues know all about the difference he was going to make to the future sustainability of BCVI and offering them the chance to make this happen by sponsoring him.
He also set himself the challenge to 'Walk 500 miles' in the 10 weeks leading up to his departure, creating another interesting and unique fundraising story for all he knew to get involved in. Calum's hard work paid off, and with tired legs he walked every mile and raised over £500 more than his target.
Now his placement is completed and with Calum’s intervention, the BCVI has the ability to analyse their finances. They can shift their focus from sporadic fundraising to concentrating on developing existing income streams, identifying new ones and effectively managing and planning their expenditure.
The placement was highly beneficial to the future of BCVI but equally important to Calum’s own development.
“I learned that I am able to work in a different working environment and that I can adapt to other working circumstances. I think this has given me a lot of confidence to make changes to my career that I might otherwise have felt very concerned about”.
