Social Research and Marketing with Bangladesh disability charity
6 months -
|
Social Researcher and Scottish Executive employee Dr Amelia Lister-Kaye, motivated by her desire to live abroad, came to CWW as a volunteer with "a very vague idea of what it might really be like, but the notion that I might be able to do something worthwhile to offset, at the most basic level, some of the immense disparity between our lifestyles through sharing what I had gained in nearly a decade of secondary education."
Amelia’s skills matched the requirements of CWW partner CDD (Centre for Disability and Development) in Dhaka. She left in April 06 for 6 months to work with CDD training staff in research skills and developing a social research team. Amelia’s support would enable CDD to undertake essential research to better plan their services to meet the social needs of people with disabilities as well as communicate important findings through the training they provide.
Whilst with CDD Amelia helped with a huge array of activities that go on in development organisations in Bangladesh - from writing subtitles for short awareness-raising films, editing project proposals, teaching English, developing marketing strategies and coaching staff in professional tools such as mind mapping.
Through out her 6 months, Amelia also contributed significantly to the capacity building of individuals in CDD. “I was very much part of a team, and my skills in a broad array of areas were called in to strengthen the team in the work they do. Management was over stretched, and the task of encouraging people to see their own strengths and have more confidence in them was one that was relatively easy to assist with.”
For Amelia her time in Bangladesh has been inspiring and life-changing. She has now returned to the UK, and has plans to work in community development.
” Bangladesh is a land of seeming contradiction; floods bring despair and livelihood; out of extreme poverty and deprivation has risen some of the worlds most successful development practices; in the face of great challenges and corruption the people show strong heart; those with relative wealth live alongside those with least; Bangladeshis are the poorest of people and yet still they are said to be the happiest. I have loved every minute of my volunteer placement here. Thank you Bangladesh.”
