Since its establishment by the UN General Assembly in the early seventies, World Environment Day is hosted every year on the 5th June by a different city and focuses on a specific theme. According to the UN Secretary-general, this year’s World Environment Day theme “Your planet needs you” is meant to inspire all of us to do our part in order to sustain the transition to a new era of greener and cleaner development.
Challenges Worldwide works alongside a number of partner organisations (in Central America, Africa and Asia) who are committed to the development of sustainable and environmental projects. Over the past 10 years, Challenges has partnered with and provided capacity-building support to a wide range of organisations focussed on sustainable development.
For the International Environment Day, it is our pleasure to outline the work of one of our partner organisation’s in Sri Lanka, RRI.
RRI
(Information provided by RRI)
RRI is a non-profit organisation based in Sri Lanka which believes that by bringing together people and the environment, the building of a harmonious and sustainably managed world can be helped. Established in 2002 by a group of environmentalists, they initially collaborated with the Eden Project in the UK to develop their first external training centre. From these humble beginnings they have grown to support seven plant nurseries, work in over 20 communities and 15 schools across the South and East of Sri Lanka, restoring more than 1,000 acres of land and planting nearly one million trees.
The beautiful island of Sri Lanka is a world-renowned, global biodiversity hotspot. It is home to more than 2% of the world's known amphibians and 3,210 flowering plant species, of which a huge 916 are endemic. Overall, about 27% of the country's plants and 22% of its wildlife is endemic. But this biological wealth is threatened through deforestation, use of agrochemicals, introduction of invasive species and the tsunami. These problems do not only affect ecosystems, but also impact on communities, particularly rural ones, struggling to survive. To stop and reverse this environmental destruction, and to empower communities, RRI delivers sustainable and innovative projects, which integrate biodiversity conservation with livelihood development.

Every year Volunteer’s Week, celebrated from the 1st to the 7th of June, gives us the opportunity to highlight and express our gratitude towards the great and invaluable contribution made by our volunteers.
Since the start of 2010, we have worked with a number of volunteers from a range of professions including legal, finance, management, research, marketing, and IT backgrounds. Their reasons for undertaking a volunteer assignment vary depending on their professional experience and personal goals. For highly experienced professionals, they state it is an opportunity to inject new life into their professional career while for newly qualified graduates it is an excellent opportunity to begin their professional career. Whatever the reason maybe, it is a chance to gain more professional and personal development experience. By making their skills and experience available to our network members overseas, volunteers are able to deliver key support and make a practical difference to our local partner organisations and their communities in emerging economies.

In celebration of World Health Day 2010 and in keeping with this year’s theme, Challenges Worldwide would like to feature the achievements of our member organisation the Belize Red Cross (hereafter referred to as The BRC). We feel it is important to celebrate World Health Day as an annual celebration created by the World Health organisation (WHO) to raise awareness globally of a specific health theme that is a priority area of concern. It is celebrated globally on the 7th of April each year. This year the theme will focus on urbanization and health with the campaign "1000 cities - 1000 lives" (WHO, 2010).
