How can HR professionals make a significant contribution to international development?
To us here at CWW, the answer is simple. They can volunteer their skills with NGOs and not-for-profit organisations overseas to help them better serve their beneficiaries.
Two such HR professionals, Anne Murray and Ian Pilbeam, are currently in Sri Lanka as part of our Scottish Government funded programme of work and since their arrival they have been very busy working with their host organisations to address the key HR issues which need their expertise.

CWW volunteer Julia Frankl is working in Galle, Sri Lanka with Rainforest Rescue International. She is there to support the organisation raise the profile of the important work they are doing to tackle the many environmental problems plaguing Sri Lanka including severe soil erosion, decreasing fish stocks, biodiversity loss, flooding and landslides associated with deforestation, and coastal vulnerability to storms, rising sea levels and tsunamis due to severe coastal ecosystem degradation.
Not long after arriving she was briefed of a high profile event involving the Sri Lankan and English cricket teams, in which her skills were needed and would be put to the test. Read how she got on below.....

2007 has been a great year for Challenges Worldwide. Alongside delivering Health programmes in the Balkans in partnership with Denver University (25 volunteers) and in Ghana with the Royal College of Psychiatrists and South West London St George’s Mental Health Trust, we have also been hard at work meeting the capacity building needs of partners in Sri Lanka, Belize, India and Bangladesh.
All of this has been done by working with some great volunteers with skills and experience from a variety of backgrounds. They have undertaken their assignments with professionalism, dedication and a good sense of adventure and fun.

Challenges Worldwide (CWW) volunteer, Mark Ware is currently in Belize for a 4 month assignment working with CWW delivery partner the Belize Audubon Society (BAS). During his 4 months in Belize Mark with help BAS develop a five year strategic plan. Since its formation in 1969 BAS has been Belize's foremost environmental organization protecting Belize's precious natural resources while educating the public about their value and sustainable use.
Before his assignment could start, Mark needed to raise some funds to cover the costs of living overseas and the planning and management of his work. He has had a remarkable success raising more than his target within 2 months. Read how he did it below……
