The Project:
Purpose of Placement
The Purpose of the position of Communications Officer is to support the organisation in developing a comprehensive communications strategy under the direction of the Director General (DG)
Background
A humanitarian organisation which provides assistance without discrimination as to nationality, race, religious beliefs, class or political opinions, they focus on four core areas.
- promoting humanitarian values
- disaster response
- disaster preparedness
- health and community care
The activities undertaken can be divided into two groups. Firstly, health and community care which includes an HIV and AIDS peer education project, First Aid training and services, Home Health Care training, Diabetes and Blood Pressure screening and education, Social Welfare clubs for older persons and soup kitchen and meals provision to school children. The second group of activities relate to disaster management and include coordination with the Government’s National Emergency Management Organisation, Vulnerability and Capacity Assessment (VCA) projects and providing relief to victims of fires, floods and other natural disasters.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Create a communications/public relations strategy to communicate with internal and external (e.g. the public and media) audiences and promote the BRC. The communications strategy should include:
o Goals
o Techniques
o Deadlines
o Budget
o Method for evaluating success
- Establish a good working relationship with various media houses, local community, civic and other organisations
- Coordinate advertising by creating and preparing promotional materials such as brochures, posters, news releases, articles for the website, newsletters and pamphlets as necessary
- Develop a system for managing graphic and photography work in order to create promotional ideas and work with outside vendors such as graphic designers, printers and photographers to make sure all communications reflect the standards and mission of the organisation
- Create a system for providing public relations support to the district branches. Maintain a high profile with district branches, educational institutions, businesses and Government departments for the purposes of enhancing and maintaining positive supportive and cooperative institutional relationships
- Develop the organisation’s master events’ schedule and assist in the planning, coordination and execution of special events
- This role involves travelling around Belize to visit Satellite offices.

You:
Skills and Experience Required
- At least 5 years experience of management experience
- Proven track-record or qualification in communications, preferably within a similar role
- Experience of research and planning communications/marketing strategies
- Experience of researching project costs and developing budgets
- Experience of research, planning and marketing.
- Strong ICT skills
- Experience of brand building
- Experience of working on publications
- Excellent time/resource planning, budgeting skills
- Experience of assessing and implementing communication systems
- Experience of providing training in communication systems/ techniques
- Experience of writing and producing materials.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
- Strong analytical skills
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Strong analysis and reporting skills
- Experience of giving presentations
- Should be able to work independently of others and be able to plan clearly and without much external input.
- Be computer literate with a sound knowledge of MS Office packages,
- Confident, motivated, flexible, enthusiastic and willing to learn.
- Self motivated with the ability to work independently
- Professional, resourceful, adaptable, creative and culturally sensitive.
