The Project:
Purpose of Placement
To support the Board of Directors in the development of a five year Strategic Plan (2009-2014) in consultation with the staff, volunteers, members, partners, community stakeholders and other supporters.
Background
A non-profit, non-governmental organization in Belize, dedicated to motivate the public to protect the environment through conservation awareness while enhancing the development of the human resource. The organization has been in existence since 1989 conducting environmental conservation activities and is primarily recognized for promoting civic pride among Belizeans, through outdoor experiential programs.
In 2007 the organisation began an active co-management program with the Forest Department for the protection of Belize's largest protected area, comprised of 264,003 acres of tropical forest. This wilderness area is part of a tri-national bioregion forming the largest remaining contiguous block of tropical forest north of the Amazon. It is an area of outstanding biological diversity and provides critical habitat for many endangered species. It also forms a key part of the internationally supported Mesoamerican Biological Corridor.
The following are the organisations main objectives:
- To foster environmental conservation action
- To promote civic pride and respect for our natural heritage
- To promote an understanding of the natural world
- To improve management of protected areas
- To develop the human potential through conservation work
- To integrate local community participation
- To develop collaborative networking
Duties and Responsibilities
- Facilitate and manage the development of a five-year strategic plan under the leadership of the Executive Director that includes the following:
• core philosophies of organisation
• a well defined vision for the future of organisation
• clear and actionable goals and objectives
• effective strategies and tactics
• implementation plan that instils accountability
- Conduct internal and external analysis to ensure the needs of all stakeholders are fully considered in the development of the plan, including the organisationˇ¦s board, staff, volunteers, members, supporters and collaborating organisations.
- Internal and external analysis to understand the challenges, opportunities, strengths and weaknesses.
- Within the strategic plan, develop action plans for the implementation of sub-programmes (e.g. fundraising and financial planning), in consultation with relevant organisation staff. These action plans should be in greater detail for the first year of implementation of the strategic plan.
- Plan for the marketing and promotion of the completed strategic plan (e.g. through public meetings) to key internal and external stakeholder groups.

You:
Skills and Experience Required
- At least five years of work experience as a business manager
- Proven experience in a business/ strategic development role
- Experience of researching, developing, writing (or contributing to) and executing business and strategic plans
- Excellent communication and leadership skills
- Have experience in managing people and training / coaching
- Have the ability to manage a significant workload independently.
- Experience in building organizational capabilities through need analysis, organisational development interventions, training and facilitation, and program evaluation
- Ability to write reports and procedure manuals
- Experience of giving presentations and facilitating meetings
- Experience conducting market and stakeholder research
- Experience setting and devising objectives, strategies and tasks
- Be able to adapt to local market conditions and culture
- Strong analytical skills
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Be computer literate with a sound knowledge of MS Office packages,
- Confident, motivated, flexible, enthusiastic and willing to learn.
- Professional, resourceful, adaptable, creative and culturally sensitive.
