The Project:
Purpose of Placement

To support the organisation’s Access to Justice Programme under its Pro Bono Lawyers sub programme in key areas of development.

Background

The organisation is a non-profit, non-partisan membership organisation committed to the creation of a society that is free from all forms of discrimination against women. Membership is open to Kenyan women lawyers and women law students. The organisation was started in 1985 after the 3rd United Nations Conference on Women held in Nairobi. Currently, there are more than 600 registered members within the organisation.

They have five key programme areas:
  1. Strategic Leadership Programme
  2. Access to Justice Programme
  3. Transformative Justice Programme
  4. Corporate Affairs
  5. Programme Support Unit

VISION …a just society free from all forms of discrimination against women.

MISSION …to ensure that women are free from all forms of injustices based on gender, sex, class, ethic origin, physical disability and religious beliefs.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Update the Pro Bono Lawyers manual to reflect international standards of best practice to include
    1. Creating due diligence checklists for various matters handled by pro bono lawyers
    2. Developing a pro bono policy which will also outline ethical standards to be observed by all their Pro Bono Lawyers
  • Work with the Head of Pro Bono Lawyers programme to develop new ideas on quid pro quo arrangements and methods to improve the programme and increase pro bono lawyer support.
  • Plan for the annual Pro Bono Lawyers’ Conference, 2009 to be held in November/December. Role will include:
    1. Developing a theme for the conference
    2. Designing a programme for the Conference
    3. Logistical arrangements for the Conference
  • To work with district staff and CBOs to increase understanding of business principles and market dynamics.

Skills and Experience Required

  • all legal training completed including qualification experience
