Background
With a mandate to connect India through its villages, this organisation has created a rural network of local entrepreneurs that provide critical goods and services throughout rural India.
They are making a major impact on the development of rural communities in India by helping to alleviate poverty and the lack of access to basic resources and providing information and services through rural IT kiosks. The use of information technology for fast and easy access to the rural market provides millions of villagers with access to competitive goods and services and eases the prohibitive costs of travelling to markets.
The organisation is working with a large number of people – both in their headquarters in Delhi, and through the ‘entrepreneurs’ they have supported to set up the IT kiosks. The organisation and its entrepreneurs, using a franchise and partnership model to develop village kiosks, are bringing jobs, wealth creation, and much needed access to rural India.
The organisation is excellent in service delivery and in the six years it has been operating, has managed to create, sustain and grow a diverse ICT network across 5 Indian states. Through a low cost, direct delivery network, significant cost and time savings for villagers have been created, and an effective channel for enterprises to sell products and services has been provided.
