KE07CM - Communications and Public Relations Officer

The volunteer will implement internal and external communications and public relations functions of the organisation. This will be from design and strategy formulation, implementation and monitoring and evaluation.

The Project:
Purpose of Placement

The position is to establish systems to handle all communications and public relations functions within the organisation, geared towards ensuring a smooth flow of information within the organisation as well as efficient communication with the public. This will include establishing a positive public image for the organisation, by ensuring frequent and favourable media coverage and cordial relations with all media houses.

The role also involves overseeing all official publications, multimedia productions, organisation’s website, and all other formal mass communication tools and channels. The volunteer is expected to participate in the process of formulation of the strategies, implementation and monitoring and evaluation of this process with particular concentration in Communications and Public Relations function.

Background

This is a charitable non-governmental organisation that was formally registered in October 2002. We also have Regional Centres hosted by various institutions around Kenya to ensure efficient and effective coverage of all eight provinces.

Our vision is the establishment of an information-rich Kenyan Society actively participating in sustainable development. We hope to help achieve this by facilitating the development of information and communication technology infrastructure and capacity in educational and training institutions as well as community information access and resource centres access centres.

This organisation is a partnership of communities, private sector corporations, civil society organisations, and international charities and development partners working together for the long term good of the nation. Our considerable success is directly attributable to this close partnership, as a result of which an estimated 750,000 young Kenyans now have access to information and communication technologies that they would have otherwise not accessed but for CFSK.



Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide leadership, management and administration in the Communication Section;
  • Preparation and submission of work plans, budgets and quarterly reports for the Communications Section;
  • Development and implementation of programme awareness activities
  • Development, production and distribution of the CFSK Newsletter and other publications, both print and digital
  • Production of multimedia/audiovisual materials as required
  • Photography (video and still) and maintaining the official library of the same
  • Production of reports and position papers in liaison with other officers
  • Liaison with the media to ensure maximum positive exposure
  • Liaison with publicity and/or media consultants retained
  • Developing and maintaining the Website. Managing the electronic Bulletin Board
  • Daily media scanning and gathering/archiving of relevant press clips and clippings

  • Organization and co-ordination of publicity events. Public Relations functions
  • Mentoring, guidance and counseling of staff and volunteers assigned to the department
  • Specific support to the Business Development Department for their sales & marketing and promotional initiatives


You:

Skills and Experience Required

  • A minimum of 3 years relevant experience
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Innovativeness and resourcefulness
  • A teamworker who is also able to work independently and without supervision
  • Good knowledge of the media and publication sector
  • Ability to research, establish and maintain relationships with journalists, public officials and members of the general public
  • High level computer literacy
  • Professional, flexible, resourceful, adaptable, creative and culturally sensitive.


As with many of our assignments, this position comes with the opportunity to become a chartered manager.
