The Project:
Purpose of Placement

Having a secure and organised data is an essential basis for ensuring the efficient delivery of projects – however they do not have the capacity to be able to move from their current, chaotic system, to a more organised one. Having a volunteer who can advise, develop and implement a new data management programme, taking into account their limited resources, and work to build the capacity of their IT manager to maintain the system, would be of huge benefit to the organisation. For a more detailed job description please contact the CWW office.

Background

The beautiful island of Sri Lanka is a world-renowned, global biodiversity hotspot. It is home to more than 2% of the world's known amphibians and 3,210 flowering plant species, of which a huge 916 are endemic. Overall, about 27% of the country's plants and 22% of its wildlife is endemic. But this biological wealth is highly threatened through deforestation, use of agrochemicals, introduction of invasive species and the tsunami. These problems do not only affect ecosystems, but also impact on communities, particularly rural ones, struggling to survive.

This organisation was established in 2002 by a group of environmentalists and is a non-profit and non-governmental organisation based in Galle, Sri Lanka. The organisation has grown and now supports seven plant nurseries, works in over 20 communities and schools and has restored many acres of land and planted nearly 130,000 trees.

The organisation in question has grown organically over the past few years. However, its computer network and hardware was not set up to be able to cope effectively with the current number of people and workload that we have. We have also had many issues loosing data due to virus attacks, computer breakdowns and human error. In addition, there are knowledge gaps within the staff team on how to use certain software and how to manage data to ensure its security. Finally, we do not have a systematic way to store project data across projects, which is essential to help us manage projects efficiently and effectively.

In addition, we would very much like to develop a database for our Carbon Offsetting programme to effectively manage the data for this project, that has the potential to scale up to a very large number of beneficiaries.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Data storage and security
    Currently there is a network of around 15 computers of varying ages and quality. We have an IT manager who is employed to maintain this network. The current network does not have a central server to share files – the only way to share is through the shared folders on personal computers. We would like to move to a system where data can be effectively stored and shared across the network ensuring network and data security.
  • Hardware
    Their computers are all at different ages and specifications and therefore would like to an assessment of all the machines to be carried out.
  • Database development
    They are currently planning a new, large-scale carbon offsetting programme which will eventually cover 1500 rural farmers. They need help to design and develop a database that can store and manipulate the details of each of these farmers.
  • IT training
    They would like a series of training programmes to improve their skills in Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and other software packages. We would also like some more specialised training for some staff on how to update and maintain the website and blog.
  • Capacity building;
  • Online donations; To be implement a system to accept online donations
