The Project:
Purpose of Placement
To develop a practical and effective marketing strategy to sell internationally the products of the organisation, villages and suppliers affiliated to the organisation’s Export Division, maximising inclusion of diverse groups in production and marketing this under the fair trade concept. The purpose of the surplus generation is to support the village development activities of the organisation.
Background
This organisation is Sri Lanka’s largest people’s organisation. It was developed around a set of coherent philosophical tenets drawn from Buddhism and Gandhian thought. Over the last 50 years they have formed a network of over 15,000 villages. Today they are engaged in relief efforts in the war-torn north as well as ongoing development projects.
Duties and Responsibilities
- To study the existing product portfolio of the organisation Export and Woodwork Divisions, their current markets, revenue generated etc, to establish the current baseline;
- To study the existing management structure of the Export business of the organisation to identify strengths as well as deficiencies etc. with a view to improve the same;
- To explore potential markets internationally for the current and potential products from the organisation as well as from Sri Lanka as a whole;
- If time permits, to study the products and services of the organisation as a whole and explore the potential of finding markets for the same;
- To assist in developing marketing tools such as improving the existing printed brochures, websites, video etc.

Skills and Experience Required
The ideal candidate will have:
- marketing qualification
- experience of marketing products internationally
- experience of using the media to promote products
- experience of working to ensure workplace access for diverse groups
- ability to work alone and supervise own time as necessary
- Confident, motivated, flexible, enthusiastic and willing to learn
- Professional, resourceful, adaptable, creative and culturally sensitive
