The Project:
Purpose of Placement

The organisation has developed a number of new communication and marketing initiatives over the past year. This assignment would involve writing and developing marketing materials as required under the existing strategy (for example press releases and newsletters) and expanding the strategy in other areas for new products such as our ecotours.

Background

The beautiful island of Sri Lanka is a world-renowned, global biodiversity hotspot. It is home to more than 2% of the world's known amphibians and 3,210 flowering plant species, of which a huge 916 are endemic. Overall, about 27% of the country's plants and 22% of its wildlife is endemic. But this biological wealth is highly threatened through deforestation, use of agrochemicals, introduction of invasive species and the tsunami. These problems do not only affect ecosystems, but also impact on communities, particularly rural ones, struggling to survive.

This organisation was established in 2002 by a group of environmentalists and is a non-profit and non-governmental organisation based in Galle, Sri Lanka. The organisation has grown and now supports seven plant nurseries, works in over 20 communities and schools and has restored many acres of land and planted nearly 130,000 trees.

The organisation’s main aim is to actively demonstrate sustainable principles and promote biodiversity conservation within the local community. It does this through environmental education and other extension activities. It also aims to reintroduce the concept of sustainable livelihood to the people of the rainforest.
