The Project:
Purpose of Placement
The organisation in association with Rainforest Tea of Sri Lanka, has been researching and developing a Rainforest Tea product. This tea grew out of a community project to increase the income of Tsunami victims and restore the surrounding native ecosystems.
The organisation now reached the point where we have a high quality green tea that we would like to get to market; however, we need someone with business and product development skills to design a plan on how best to get this product to sell. Background
This organisation was established in 2002 by a group of environmentalists and is a non-profit and non-governmental organisation based in Galle, Sri Lanka. It initially collaborated with the Eden Project in the UK to develop its first external training centre. The organisation has grown and now supports seven plant nurseries, works in over 20 communities and schools and has restored many acres of land and planted nearly 130,000 trees.
The organisation’s main aim is to actively demonstrate sustainable principles and promote biodiversity conservation within the local community. It does this through environmental education and other extension activities. It also aims to reintroduce the concept of sustainable livelihood to the people of the rainforest.
We believe that by bringing together people and the environment, we can help build a harmonious and sustainably managed world.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Identify market opportunities in Sri Lanka and abroad for high quality organic tea products
- Identify processes the organisation needs to develop to meet the requirements of the marketplace
- Develop organic tea products to meet the needs of the marketplace
- Develop 3 years business plan
- Oversee initial implementation of business plan
- Train the staff in business and product management skills to ensure sustainability of business plan
- Work with communication and marketing staff to develop a product brand and marketing campaign
- Identify further opportunities for the organisation to access the organic market through other products such as vegetables, dried fruit, chutney and herb production etc
- Development of a community based business model that can be replicated across other communities

You:
Skills and Experience Required
- At least five years of work experience as a business manager
- Proven track record of market analysis and product development
- Experience of writing and executing business plans
- Be able to adapt to local market conditions and culture
- Have experience in managing people and training / coaching
- Have the ability to manage a significant workload independently
- Be computer literate with a sound knowledge of MS Office packages
- Confident, motivated, flexible, enthusiastic and willing to learn
- Be willing to travel and work in outstations
- Experience in working in export market
- Experience of working within the organic and / or fair-trade sector
- Experience of the food industry
