The Project:
Purpose of Placement
To assist the hospital by enhancing patient care through supervision of a ward, performing basic medical procedures and managing patients.
Background
The hospital is located in Cameroon and has 250 beds, and was the second PAACS Hospital to train residents in General Surgery. This hospital is approximately 50 years old and is located in a rural setting. The nearest city is Bamenda, the Provincial capital, with a population of 300,000 about 25 miles away. The mountainous scenery of the Bamenda plateau is at around 5,800 ft., offering a beautiful landscape with a moderate temperature.
Duties and Responsibilities
- The volunteer will be in charge of a 30-40 bed ward which will include performing rounds daily (Monday to Saturday)
- Perform procedures as desired (LP, thoracocentesis, paracentesis, suturing, I&D of abscesses)
- See patients in out-patient department, starting after morning rounds and concluding 3-4pm
- Return to ward in late afternoon to review lab results, reassess critically ill patients and see new admissions
- Be on call overnight once a week

You:
Skills and Experience Required
The ideal candidate will have:
- The candidate will have experience as a General Medical practitioner and ideally be trained in paediatrics.
- Experience in LP, thoracocentesis, paracentesis, suturing, I&D of abscesses
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Self motivated with the ability to work independently
- Professional, flexible, resourceful, adaptable, creative and culturally sensitive.
- Ability to work with minimum supervision
