The Project:
Purpose of Placement
To assist the hospital by enhancing patient care through supporting pastoral staff, assessing and advising on discharge planning.
Background
The hospital is located in Cameroon and has 250 beds, and was the second PAACS Hospital to train residents in General Surgery. This hospital is approximately 50 years old and is located in a rural setting. The nearest city is Bamenda, the Provincial capital, with a population of 300,000 about 25 miles away. The mountainous scenery of the Bamenda plateau is at around 5,800 ft., offering a beautiful landscape with a moderate temperature.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Class and case advocacy
- Assess family and carer dynamics
- Resolve conflicts between patients and staff e.g. non-compliance with care
- Advocacy advisor; the voice of patients who do not have carers, lack adequate care from carers or who require advocacy with their own family.
- Discharge planning: coordinate team function for planning discharge, including case conferences, assess the families ability to care for the patient when they have returned home in terms of financial viability and social factors.
- Intervene in cases where the family appears to be unable to cope with discharge.

You:
Skills and Experience Required
The ideal candidate will have:
- At least 2 years experience in Social Work.
- Completed a degree in a related subject would be an advantage.
- Excellent interpersonal skills.
- Self motivated with the ability to work independently.
- Professional, flexible, resourceful, adaptable, creative and culturally sensitive.
- Ability to work with minimum supervision.
