The Project:
Purpose of Placement
The organisation is seeking an experienced professional volunteer to assist with assessing pipeline and preparing investment recommendations for small and growing clean energy companies and assist with asset management in Uganda.
Background
The organisation was launched in 1994 and has made over 250 investments in clean energy enterprises in more than 25 counties in Africa, Asia and Latin America since then. They have ten offices globally (and 48 staff members), eight of those offices in developing countries, staffed locally. They invest both business development services and capital, neither of which is generally available to entrepreneurs in these countries.
It is a first mover in the small and growing business sector. In 1994 they were the only organisation providing services and capital to companies. While new organisations are in the sector, they continue to be a leader. As they continue to evolve to meet the needs of their clients as efficiently and sustainably as possible, they are currently preparing a new 4 year business plan which will make them less grant dependent and more sustainable. As they transit to the next evolution of the organisation, they need additional human resources to provide these services to their existing clients. A Challenges worldwide volunteer would help during this critical growth phase.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Pipeline and portfolio management, including investment structuring, due diligence, asset management, and loan restructuring for non-performing loans.
- Provide business development support to clean energy companies. Provide direction and mentoring support to pipeline and portfolio companies in receipt of start-up and growth capital and assistance with securing further investment in partnership with co-lenders and investors.
- Work with the organisation’s staff in Africa as well as the US to provide efficient service to pipeline and portfolio companies.
