The Project:
Purpose of Placement
The purpose of the post is to facilitate wealth creation and reduce poverty through initiatives that spark small, viable, private sector activities in the project areas. Specifically:
1. To support the organisation social enterprises and community businesses programme to improve and further develop their trading income; in order to ensure their future sustainability.
2. To support and manage a caseload of new and established social enterprises.
Background
The organisation’s mission is “To facilitate an equitable and secure society by promoting good governance and sustainable social-economic development at the community level.” The organisation is implementing community development and asset management programme involving two cooperative societies (one rural Aloe farmers’ cooperative society and one urban youth savings and credit cooperative society). These institutions are in their infant stages and the organisation requires a business development expert to support and mentor them to higher levels where members benefit from the cooperatives as a tool for economic empowerment and for advocacy for better policies to empower farmers and the youth.
Duties and Responsibilities
- To actively seek out and work with residents from priority areas who are interested in developing their ideas into a social enterprise.
- To effectively develop and support a caseload of social enterprises through the establishment and maintenance of relationships with key contacts.
- To support social enterprises with action plan, development and implementation.
- To advise groups on potential sources of start-up, revenue and expansion funding and wider support for social enterprise development.
- To develop efficient referral networks, and forge strong links with emerging third sector organizations, agencies and statutory organizations to publicize and support the activities of the youth cooperative society.
- Deliver a programme of awareness rising through seminars, information days and other targeted public events to establish the concept of social enterprise and a viable option for groups to adopt.
- To support the production of effective promotional literature and publicize the social enterprises through presentations and other means using appropriate channels, networks and outlets.
- To develop and produce reports in line with project reporting procedures.
- Establish and maintain good working relationships with colleagues to ensure delivery of personal, team and organizational objectives.
- To undertake such other duties as may be required, commensurate with the grade of the post.
- To investigate, propose and facilitate the start or expansion of sustainable business.
- To conduct baseline surveys, maintain project data & compile reports.
- To develop a marketing and sales plan to meet the needs and objectives of the participating organizations, both individually and collectively as appropriate.
- To develop suitable marketing material.

You:
Skills and Experience Required
- Demonstrated and recognized expertise in entrepreneurship and small enterprise development.
- Strong training background in business development and ability to build capacity of service providers.
- Strong knowledge and experience of the social enterprise/social economy sector and will have proven track record of helping organizations to develop social enterprises.
- Proficient in Word and Data Processing, PowerPoint presentations.
- Excellent writing skills: at least 3 years experience in developing proposals, writing reports, feature stories, and other relevant developmental work.
- Excellent communications and negotiation skills; fluent in both written and oral English.
